FIRST LOOK! The DDA 1/24 HJ Sandman test shots have arrived at SMS HQ

Since the release of the 1/24 Holden HQs a few months ago, the modelling world has been eagerly anticipating the next release from Diecast Distributors Australia, the Holden HJ Sandman panel van.  As we are working closely with DDA on releasing paint colours to match their kits and I had previously built and pained the original HQ prototype, Jesse from DDA asked if I would build one of the new HJ Sandmans for use in promotion in the lead up to their release in early July 2023.  The test shots for the HJ "Blown Custom" arrived here at SMS HQ a week or so ago and I finally had a chance to sit down and have a closer inspection of the sprues. First impression I had of the kit was how clean each part has been molded. Each part is clean, with no flash or seam lines to contend with. ...

We've teamed up with DDA to produce a new range of Australian Auto Colours!

We've teamed up with DDA to produce a new range of Australian Auto Colours!

Recently, Diecast Distributors Australia (DDA) announced their new line of 1/24 scale plastic model kits based on popular Australian muscle cars. The first release coming in early 2023 will consist of 3 kits, the Holden HQ Monaro, the HQ Kingswood and the Monaro "Slammed" version. We reached out to Jesse and John at DDA back in May 2022 when they were announced and opened up talks about future collaborations between us here at SMS and DDA. After a few back and forths, we are extremely happy to announce that SMS has officially partnered with DDA with an exclusive deal to produce a new range of Australian Auto paints and paint sets, beginning with a selection of colours for the Holden HQ kits that are on the horizon. So as a proof of concept, we also managed to get our hands on the ONLY prototype of the new kits that is in Australia (the...

TIP : The best agitators for your water based paints

TIP : The best agitators for your water based paints

Here's a tip for mixing your water based paints including our Infinite Colour range - instead of a ball bearing as an agitator, use an M3 sized stainless steel nut!   The bottle on the left is before and on the right, after about 30 seconds of shaking.   The angular shape of the nut will aid in the mixing and best of all, when you turn the bottle upside down to squeeze some paint out, it doesn't block the nozzle like ball bearings do!   And even better, you can easily get these from hardware stores!   The Infinite Colour range is available now : https://www.scalemodeller.com.au/collections/infinite-colour

INFINITE COLOUR - A Brand New Paint Range!

INFINITE COLOUR - A Brand New Paint Range!

INTRODUCING INFINITE COLOUR! Infinite Colour is our brand new WATER BASED paint range, designed specifically for miniature and figure painters and can also be used on scale models. Infinite Colour features a strong adhesion on many different mediums (including plastics, resins, metals, timbers etc), has a strong vibrant pigment, is designed specifically for hand brushing applications, can be thinned with water (for creating glazes, or thinning for airbrushing) and cleaned up with water. This range has been in development since 2017. Over the years on and off, we have been testing a multitude of different water based urethanes for this specific application and none met the high standard requirements that I set and wanted for this range. Earlier this year, we found the right product through a local manufacturing partner and after almost 6 months of thorough testing and significant investment, Infinite Colour will finally launch to the market on...
